Notable Quotables Part 2

Here are a few more qotes I found interesting.

10."Never confuse movement with action." Ernest Hemingway

This one was good and a little more profound than the others. I think I am going to move it to the top just in case people stop reading before the good stuff. Sorry that the numbers are off. I did not feel like fixing it.

How people do we know (or is this you) that think that remaining completely busy and "on the move" is the best way to go. Some folks cannot stand silence or inactivity. It would then force the person to think about how messed up they were. Hmmm.

I remember during my drug days, it is kind of like a tweaker (see: someone on meth). They run around (literally or figuratively) but get nowhere, and when they start to come down (slow down) they can't handle it. Left to their own thoughts, they go crazier. Before you think that only people on drugs are like this, many people do this: with alcohol, TV, cleaning, talking, cell phones and other things.

6. "Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water." W.C. fields

This kind of reminded me of yesterdays where you need to find something strange each day.

7. "The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found." Calvin Trillin

My apologies to moms everywhere.

8. "Since we cannot know all that there is to be known about anything, we ought to know a little about everything." Blaise Pascal

This seems to be a good motto for me. :-)

9."Never judge a book by its movie." J.W. Eagan

This one was cute. OK, I never said they were all gonna be deep quotes or deep thoughts by Jack Handey.

I have found out firsthand that movement and action should not be confused. One time, when I went to your very first classroom, Derrick, at CCA you sure did move around a lot, but didn't end up accomplishing much. You've gotten much better since then, but I can definately make the connection.

Even W.C. Fields tried to muster up the internal fortitude to abstain from alcohol. He had an intereting experience with this effort.

"i"d hardly quit liquor, before i got the d.t.'s. I'd see men with whiskers and high hats, sitting on bulls and they'd charge me.They almost got me one afternoon".

At this time, he had been legally drunk for 23 years. His consumption of gin had risen to nearly two quarts a day.

How blessed we are to have the mental capacity to endure positive change. By the time the previous quote by W.C. was penned, his mental capacity was unable to understand or make the challenge to quit drinking. Can you imagine, two entire quarts of gin a day?

I have quite a collection of history on the life of W.C. Fields.

Hey now, that was not nice. It was true, but not nice. :-) We are supposed to speak the truth in love, so I guess that means sometimes we can be considered mean when we speak the truth.

But because it can be a tough pill to swallow, do it with respect and gentleness.

I have had family members that, for years, they were functioning drunks. Rarely were there times that they did not have drinks in their hands.

It wasn't until hospital visits gave them a wake up call and there were heatlth problems that woke them up to the fact that there might be a problem.

I remember even from my own past, even though I was pretty screwed up, I always found someone to compare myself to. And you can be sure the person I compared myself to was not the person that was normal. They were the person that was more messed up than me.

"At least I am not as bad as..." I find it difficult to think of many people that do not do this--It is always easy for us to find someone worse than us. But if we are honest about our situation and compare ourselves to God's standard, we realize how far from good we really are.

It seems the more I learn about God and who He is, the less noble my "goodness" is. Plus, as the Word says, the heart is decetful above all things. So, don't follow your heart, it will get you in trouble.
