I'm all for loving animals, but human life is just more valuable.
"LAKE WALES, Fla. — A man trying to save a dog being pulled into a stump grinder was caught in the machine and killed, authorities said.
Robert J. Wagner, 25, and his friend, John Santilli, of Port St. Lucie, were using the grinder while at a hunting camp in the River Ranch area about 9:40 a.m. Sunday, said Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood. Santilli's dog got entangled when the animal's leash got caught in the machine, Wood said.
Wagner tried to rescue the 6-month-old Weimaraner, but was pulled into the machine's blades. He died of lacerations and major head and body trauma, Wood said.
Deputies had to use four-wheel drive vehicles to get to the scene. Wagner and the dog were dead by the time authorities arrived."
Those machines can be nasty. And they kind of drag the wood into them. It can be very indimidating and frightening, to be sure. But if my dog is being pulled in there, 1)that is a super strong machine (Max is built like a wild boar), 2)I am not reaching in to save him. If I could stay on the outside of the chipper, that is more pleasant to me, and my Beloved. But I'm sorry. I love him, but not enough to die saving him. I would be sad, but I would rather be here to grieve him. I am certain most of my family and friends would agree.

I agree. :-). I mean, I would do anything that I could safely do to save one of our dogs. That is a horrible situation to be in. But, like you, I would not die for my dog.
I also agree. I have had dogs all of my life. I once jumped into The West Walker River to pull my dog ( Flop ) out of a small whirlpool. Yet, I was safe as I could be at 15 years old :-). Given a heavy machinery deal, or a massive injury, it is best to put your four legged friend out of their pain. When my dog Luke snapped his hip, he unable to be repaired. Lori and I slept on the floor with him that evening. He got up at 2:00 am and licked my face with his tail going full speed. He then did the same to Lori. He laid down and prepared to die. He knew. He never budged and inch before we had him euthanised. I wonder what the Lord has in store for us when we get to heaven. Did he provide these wonderful companions for us to love here on earth only? The oxymoron of that is that some people raise pigs as pets and then for food. I'm not sure I would want to run into that pig that I made bacon out of if animals are in heaven. That pig might have an attitude with me.
While animals sometimes have soulish qualities, I do not think the Bible has given any indication that they will be in heaven.
Also, since God has given us, humans, dominion over all the other animals, I think it is arguable that He gave us animals to eat and sustain us regardless of whther or not we've developed relationships with them.
I had a few pigs growing up. I rode them. I picked ticks off them, and eventually we ate one of them. I remember it was pretty tasty bacon.
Mmmm,
Derrick
