God is Our Rock and Shelter Pt. 1

From Pastor Gary

God is Our Rock and Shelter
In Psalm 61 we find great encouragement for those times when we feel overwhelmed. “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings” (N.K.J.V.). With a Word Bible Commentary states, “Distance. No matter how far away you go, God hears your prayers, for His ears are open to the cries of His children (Ps. 34:15). David was far from the house of God, yet the Lord heard his prayer and answered. Depth. No matter how far down you sink, God can lift you up. When life overwhelms you, take time to pray. Let God lift you up and put you on the Rock that will never sink. Danger. Prayer brings you into the Holy of Holies, under the shadow of His wings (Exod. 25:20), where God’s glory dwells. God preserves and protects His own until that hour when He calls them to Himself. Delight. Do you find delight in prayer, or is prayer only an “emergency exercise” to get you out of trouble? David ended the psalm with an expression of praise and an affirmation of obedience. Prayer changes things, but prayer also changes people, starting with the one who does the praying!” These are wonderful truths that can help us take an appropriate encouragement from this passage.

That is one of the finest things I have ever read.

I think it is an encouraging and challenging post, as least for me. I do not pray as often as I should, and I am struggling right now with praying for someone I do not get along with. I know what I should do, but I am not very willing right now. I am moving in the right direction-I am more willing today than yesterday.

I know of the power of prayer and I know God can remove the stumbling block in my life, but it is a struggle.

Like the man in the Bible...paraphrasing...Lord, I believe...help me with my unbelief.

If it were me as the person in question, I would want to know. Better to air differences and/or situations that can clear the air, so to speak. At least then, it does not burden your spirit and it assists the other person to know your true feelings.
