VENTURA, California — The family of a gay teenager who was
fatally shot in class blames the school district for allowing their son to wear
makeup and feminine clothing to school — factors the family claims led to the
death.
The parents and brother of 15-year-old Larry King of Oxnard filed a
personal injury claim against the Hueneme school district seeking unspecified
damages for not enforcing the dress code, The Ventura County Star
reported.
This story is a sad tale of the taking of a young life. However, I think it is silly that the parents are trying to say it was because they did not enforce the dress code...Does this strike anyone else as silly?
By the way, are the parents' responsible because they also failed to teach their son that he probably should not dress like a girl and go flaunting it at school. It seems like common sense that if you are going to dress or act weird, you are increasing the chances of ridicule, etc. Now, do not get me wrong; I do not want to make it seem like those involved in killing and/or demeaning this young man are not wrong, but if you dress a certain way, you can expect a certain degree of "unwanted attention".
For example, if you dress like dracula, you can expect some attention, not always positive. If you dress like a, pardon my language, slut, you can expect guys to come and give you attention. If you are a guy and you put on a dress and makeup, you will not be welcomed with open arms. This is, by no means, not deserving of death, but you should expect some teasing and bullying. It is not right, but it is reality.
His parents, Dawn and Gregory King, said faculty members knew their son had
"unique vulnerabilities" and was subject to abuse because of his sexual
orientation.
I don't think it was simply his sexual preference, but the fact he was dressing in makeup and dresses. Other reports also say that he was "flirting" with some guys who did not appreciate his advances.
So, do you think the school ought to be held responsible for not enforcing the dress code? How about we hold the guy who shot and killed him responsible? I could be wrong, but I think that this is a family that is hurting and they are trying to blame anyone and everyone they can.
I agree that the school should have stopped this guy from wearing a skirt. But here's a slight wrinkle: since homosexuals are becoming the next "protected" class of citizens, there would have been a lawsuit slapped on the school so fast if they had tried to stop this student's "personal expression" of his sexuality. Sounds like a double edged sword to me.
