This comedian from Britain decided to joke about virginity and several celebrities (and many noncelebrities) promise to remain chaste until marriage.MTV Video Music Awards host Russell Brand took several digs Sunday night at
young stars wearing "purity rings" to pledge their virginity until marriage —
and "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks wasn't having any of it.
The British Brand — who is a celebrity in the U.K. but not well known
in the U.S. — made a series of jokes centered on the Jonas Brothers and their
rings. At one point, he even pretended he'd stolen a Jonas Brother's virginity
as he held a ring in his hand.
Jordin Sparks, from American Idol had this say in response, when she went to the podium."It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants
to be a slut," Sparks spat back, the auditorium filling with applause. Sparks, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez are also
among the young stars who have vowed to remain chaste.---That is quite a gutsy thing to say in the midst of the slease that is MTV. Well done, Jordin.
---One reader of the article suggests that Sparks was booed when she made the comment.
From a reader: If I may be so bold as to ask — what VMAs were you watching??? The arena did not cheer Jordin Sparks' response to Brand, she was booed. Sure, a smattering of applause from Jonas Brothers fans, but mostly we saw a stunned John Legend and an audience amazed by the rudeness of the former "Idol" contestant. If you are willing to so publicly discuss your pledge to remain chaste, a decision that is extremely personal, not trendy, one should expect that they will be lambasted. Jordin, unfortunately for her, found out the hard way that if you do not have a sense of humor about yourself, you will not only be chaste but chastised.
----I find it interesting that the reader seems to suggest that it is not okay to proclaim your modesty and chastity, but has no problem with the proclamation of promiscuity so rampant in society. How dare you talk about something so personal--you're a conservative...hmmm.
