The Old and the New

Old Testament
-------------
“And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis 15.6)

New Testament
-------------
“And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” (Acts 13.39)

******************************************

Old Testament
-------------
“But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.” (Ezekiel 18.21)

New Testament
-------------
“When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” (Acts 11.18)

******************************************

Old Testament
-------------
“He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment." (Deuteronomy 10.18)

New Testament
-------------
“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” (Hebrews 12.6)

******************************************

Now guess which the following passages belong to:

1. “Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches, [take heed] lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in [his] goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.”

2. “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.”

3. “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance [belongeth] unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. [It is] a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

4. “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God [is] a consuming fire.”

5. “As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all [men]. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”

Answer:

1. Romans 11.19-22
2. 2 Corinthians 5.11
3. Hebrews 10.26-31
4. Hebrews 12.28-29
5. 1 Peter 2.16-17

Now guess which the following passages belong to:

1. “And the people gave a shout, [saying, It is] the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.”

2. “And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.”

3. “18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

Answer:

1. Acts 12.22-23
2. Revelation 2.21-23
3. Romans 1.18-32

And remember kids, Blogger stinks!

Besides Blogger stinks, what is your point in this? Gotta break it down for us simple minded. :-)

In that case, I'll make a mental note to self: unsuccessful attempt at driving home the point that the old, sophomoric "Oh, but that's the *Old* Testament!" defense of the Bible is wack.

You know how it is: Bible skeptics, naysayers or gainsayers point at a passage of the OT where God kills someone and say, "See how horrible the Bible is?" And then some particular Christian will come along and ignorantly say, "Oh, that's the Old Testament!" Implication is that the New Testament is not horrible, as if that even matters.

But the OT and NT are no different in their informing us that God does not mess around. Sinners still get bumped off in the NT and the threat or promise of divine wrath is still a reality. In fact, this is not the only way in which the Bible's message has not changed. Salvation is of faith, as always, and repentance is a matter of life or death, as always.

*******

By the way, I cannot stress how much I detest the ridiculously low-quality of the HTML programming of Blogger. It won't accept tags, it destroys other tags or formatting, it lies to you in its preview form before you post--it's a real mess.

Thanks for clearing that up a bit. I think your point just continues to illustrate the silly "theology" of many Christians. There is just not that much solid teaching.

When you have major churches like Willow Creek that just think the reason the "mature" believers in their church are not growing is that they are not good self-feeders...The Church is where you ought to be getting fed and hooked up with resources to follow up, not just "here's a milky treat"- good luck on your own.

Plus, these "self-feeders" just go to the internet where there is an abundance of info, but then you have the difficulty of sifting through the truth or validity of it. Like those that think the Daily Show or The Onion are real news sources. :-)

Yeah, I have some problems with Blogger too, but I just don't want to go switching to another place. :-) I'm lazy that way. I know when I was first setting this up, how much time I spent trying to change various aspects of design or...yeah, not much fun for a newbie like me.

Hope you are well, my friend.
